Today there was an official opening of the construction of the Kenkiyak-Atyrau Oil Pipeline Project in Kazakhstan the general Contractor of which based on the results of the tender held is Stroytransgaz. In accordance with the Contract “Stroytransgaz” will carry out engineering, procurement and construction of the linear part and pumping stations of the oil pipeline and this will ensure transportation of crude oil from the oil fields of the Aktiubinsk region to the system of the export oil pipeline of CPC and the Atyrau refinery at the rate of 6 million tons a year with further increase of the design capacity up to 12 million tons annually. Later on by 2005 the Owner – CJSC North-West Pipeline Company MunaiTas, the shareholders of which are CJSC KazMunaiGaz and CNPC (Chinese National Petroleum Company), is planning to use this oil pipeline in the reverse mode as the main section of of the Kazakh-Chinese Transcontinental Oil Pipeline. The total length of the Kenkiyak-Atyrau route is 448.8 km and the diameter of the pipe is 24” (610mm). For construction of the oil pipeline pipes of grade 17G1S and quality class X65 will be used with three layers of PE mill coating. A special feature of this pipeline is the presence of a considerable number of crossings – more than 150 or one crossing for each 3 km of the route. It has been scheduled to put the pipeline into operation in the first half of December this year. In this case the major works on the linear part of the pipeline Stroytransgaz is planning to complete in October 2002. Thus the average rate of construction makes up 3.5 km a day. Our main objective in this Project is to transfer experience and know-how to Kazakh builders, to lay down foundation for a long term cooperation with the main Contractor of CJSC North-West Pipeline Company “MunaiTas” as well as outside Kazakhstan. “Our partnership will serve as the example and basis for the development and strengthening of good-neighbor relations between our states” said Mr V.L. Bokhanovsky the First Vice President of JSC Stroyransgaz at the opening ceremony on commencement of construction. With the aim to expedite the works on construction of the oil pipeline it has been planned to use modern welding techniques of the CRC-Evans system. For installation of the oil pipeline crossing beneath the Ural river a directional drilling method will be used and this allows one to reduce the Construction period and increase the reliability and durability of the pipeline and it will exclude any risk of fouling the waterway and prevent the negative effect with regard to fish stock.
