Stroytransgaz Looks for Construction Deals

Maghreb Confidential, 04.11.2010

A long–standing partner of Sonatrach in building gas pipelines, Stroytransgaz is keen on extending its operations to Algeria’s public works and buildings sector. The Russian group, which also explores for oil in Algeria, is examining opportunities in partnership with the local companies Cosider and Etterkib. Cosider is active across–the–board in civil engineering and construction as well as in farming (Agral) and the construction of tunnels, railways and tramways, air bases and dams. One of its current projects is the In Salah-Tamanrasset water transfer program. Etterkib, an affiliate of Sonelgaz, is taking part in building the main power plants in Algeria (F’kirina, Hassi Messaoud, etc) but also cement works at Tebesa and Zahana ; semolina units at Baghlia and Sidi Aich ; the restoration of the El Hadjar steelworks ;and the pumping station at the Beni Haroun Dam.

Another company that Stroytransgaz is eyeing as a potential partner is ENAC (Entreprise Nationale Algerienne des Canalisations).Still, the Russian group isn’t neglecting its traditional trade. Sergey Makarov, chairman of Stroytransgaz’s executive board, held talks about gas infrastructure with Noureddine Cherouati, chairman of Sonatrach, during Russian president Dimitri Medvedev’s trip to Algiers in early October.
